The Money Question: Free Inference, Real Wallets, And Whose Moat

A $250M round landed, and so did the argument about what it buys. People logged $700 in dead subscriptions killed and pub reservations moved by memory, while skeptics counted subsidized tokens, exportable memory, and VC tweets due for deletion.

What people were saying

The funding news set the frame: @YellowMedia_HQ and @PANONYGroup both logged the $250M at $2.5B, and the rest of the day was people arguing about what, exactly, that money is buying.

@saturnial offered the sharpest version: this is the Uber playbook, subsidized usage to build a habit, and the only question is what compounds. His guess was memory depth per user. The replies were not sold. @kushalbyatnal took the opposite tack and credited five boring UX decisions (background browsers, frequent crons, blue bubbles, emoji reactions, a voice that reads human) as the actual product.

The praise

The anecdote of the day belonged to @thisiskp_, who reported roughly $700 a year in zombie subscriptions found and killed, including a universal TV remote app quietly billing $5.99 per week. Also an AAA membership made redundant by Geico, a domain auto-renewal caught the night before, and a nightly school lunch menu nobody asked for.

@sytaylor got the most reach with the smallest task: telling it to move "that thing we did" back 90 minutes, and having it remember the pub, rebook, and confirm. @danpeguine had a Portuguese tax slip decoded, both kids' school years prepped, and a dead card swapped mid-checkout. @jaimenovoa did a flight check-in and a full DNS migration without leaving iMessage. @lilyjclifford set up an hourly digest of pre-1960s acoustic guitars entering dealer inventory, priced against historical averages, which is the most specific use case anyone has posted.

The pushback

@anikamirzaa pointed out it is not free if it has moved $1,000 of your money, a sentiment @florian_jue echoed after five straight purchases. @rileybrown proposed a bot tracking how many VC tweets get deleted in six months. @dravishaa asked what outcome here was actually hard before. @alben_dsouza found it largely defanged in India, no payments, no tickets, no food. @AdvaitRaykar was, by his account, ghosted after a week.

And @slopdotwtf wrote the day's most bitter post: same idea, a year earlier, Raspberry Pis and all, minus the round.
